PL referee David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation.
Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following the emergence of a video online on Monday. The video appears to show Coote making disparaging remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. PGMOL released a statement confirming Coote's suspension pending a full investigation into the incident.
The refereeing body stated on Monday that David Coote has been "suspended with immediate effect" due to the circulating video, which allegedly shows Coote using expletives to describe Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, labeling Klopp as "arrogant." PGMOL added, "David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete."
Initially, Darren Lewis of the Mirror reported on social media that Coote was adamant the viral video was not genuine. However, Lewis later updated that Coote has accepted the video's authenticity, though he does not recall the conversation, recorded several years ago.
David Coote, a Premier League official since 2018, refereed Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday. He also officiated the 2023 Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle United and has served as a lead VAR, being appointed to Euro 2024.
Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool in the summer after over eight years at the club. Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool sits five points clear at the top of the Premier League.
